Formaldehyde releasers

Preservatives that slowly release formaldehyde — a known human carcinogen — into the product over time.

What it is

Rather than adding formaldehyde directly, manufacturers use compounds that break down in water and release small amounts continuously, keeping shampoos, lotions and household cleaners microbially stable.

Why it's worth avoiding

Even at low concentrations these are among the most frequent causes of preservative contact allergy, and they raise indoor formaldehyde exposure in poorly ventilated bathrooms.

What the evidence says

IARC classifies formaldehyde as a Group 1 human carcinogen (nasopharyngeal cancer, leukaemia at occupational levels). Dermatology patch-test registries consistently rank formaldehyde releasers in the top ten contact allergens.

How it's regulated

The EU caps free formaldehyde and requires 'releases formaldehyde' labelling above 0.001%. Several releasers are banned in cosmetics in the EU; US federal cosmetic limits remain far looser, though California's AB 496 restricts some.

Is the amount released actually harmful?+

The cancer evidence comes from high occupational inhalation exposure, not from a bottle of conditioner. The realistic consumer risks are contact allergy and indoor air quality — both good enough reasons to prefer an alternative preservative.

Look for CARB Phase 2, E1/E0 or GREENGUARD Gold on the product page. Unrated MDF, particleboard and plywood are the main sources of indoor formaldehyde off-gassing.

How to spot Formaldehyde releasers on a label

Formaldehyde releasers rarely appears under that exact name on packaging. Manufacturers use trade names, umbrella terms such as "fragrance" or "performance finish", or simply omit process chemicals that are not classed as intentional ingredients. That is why reading a claim ("free from", "non-toxic", "natural") tells you far less than reading the composition and the certifications behind it.

The practical approach is to work backwards from certifications that test finished products rather than from ingredient lists alone. A scheme with residue limits and third-party lab testing catches substances that a marketing claim will never mention, including contamination introduced during dyeing, coating or packaging.

Exposure also depends on use. The same substance matters much more in something worn against skin all day, heated, chewed, or used on broken skin than in a rigid object handled briefly. Judge risk by contact, duration and temperature, not by the scariness of the name.
