What it is
Palm oil and its derivatives appear in roughly half of packaged supermarket products, from biscuits and instant noodles to soap, lipstick and detergent, often under names that never mention palm.
Why it's worth avoiding
Uncertified expansion is a primary driver of lowland-rainforest and peatland conversion in Indonesia and Malaysia, with associated carbon emissions, orangutan and tiger habitat loss, and documented forced-labour cases.
What the evidence says
Peer-reviewed land-use analyses attribute a large share of Bornean and Sumatran forest loss since 1990 to plantation conversion. The US CBP has issued withhold-release orders against major producers over forced-labour indicators.
How it's regulated
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requires geolocation-level due diligence for palm oil placed on the EU market. RSPO Segregated and Identity Preserved are the strongest voluntary supply-chain claims.

Is boycotting palm oil better for forests?+
Usually not. Palm yields 4–10× more oil per hectare than rapeseed, soy or coconut, so substitution can increase total land conversion. Certified, traceable palm generally beats an unverified substitute.
Which RSPO model should I look for?+
Identity Preserved is strongest, then Segregated, then Mass Balance. Book & Claim (credits) does not guarantee any physical palm in your product came from a certified mill.
