PFAS ('forever chemicals')
A family of ~15,000 fluorinated chemicals used for stain, grease and water resistance that do not break down in the environment.

What it is
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are synthetic chemicals built around an extremely stable carbon–fluorine bond. That bond is what makes a pan non-stick, a jacket bead water and a takeaway box resist grease — and it is also why the molecules persist in soil, water and blood for decades.
Why it's worth avoiding
PFAS migrate out of products during use, washing and disposal. They are now detectable in the blood of most people tested in the US and EU, in rainwater worldwide, and in drinking-water supplies near manufacturing and firefighting-foam sites.
What the evidence says
The US National Academies (2022) linked PFAS exposure to decreased antibody response, dyslipidemia, reduced infant birth weight and kidney cancer. EFSA set a tolerable weekly intake of 4.4 ng/kg body weight for four PFAS in 2020 — a level many European diets already exceed.
How it's regulated
Denmark banned PFAS in food-contact paper and board (2020); the EU restricted PFHxA in consumer textiles (2024) and is assessing a universal restriction. Several US states (ME, MN, CA, WA) have passed phase-out laws for cookware, textiles and cosmetics.

Are PFAS-free non-stick pans safe?+
Ceramic sol-gel coatings contain no fluoropolymers, so they avoid PFAS entirely, but they degrade faster than PTFE. Cast iron and carbon steel last decades and have no coating to fail.
Can I test a product for PFAS at home?+
Not reliably. Total-fluorine screening requires lab equipment. In practice, look for an explicit 'PFAS-free' claim backed by a certification such as OEKO-TEX or bluesign, or by published test results.
Does washing remove PFAS from clothing?+
No. Washing releases some PFAS into wastewater but the treatment is bonded to the fibre and continues to shed for the life of the garment.

How to spot PFAS ('forever chemicals') on a label
PFAS ('forever chemicals') rarely appears under that exact name on packaging. Manufacturers use trade names, umbrella terms such as "fragrance" or "performance finish", or simply omit process chemicals that are not classed as intentional ingredients. That is why reading a claim ("free from", "non-toxic", "natural") tells you far less than reading the composition and the certifications behind it.
The practical approach is to work backwards from certifications that test finished products rather than from ingredient lists alone. A scheme with residue limits and third-party lab testing catches substances that a marketing claim will never mention, including contamination introduced during dyeing, coating or packaging.
Exposure also depends on use. The same substance matters much more in something worn against skin all day, heated, chewed, or used on broken skin than in a rigid object handled briefly. Judge risk by contact, duration and temperature, not by the scariness of the name.
