What it is
Volatile organic compounds keep paints workable, help cleaners cut grease and carry fragrance. They evaporate during and after use, and indoor concentrations are routinely several times higher than outdoors.
Why it's worth avoiding
Short-term exposure causes headaches, eye and airway irritation; some individual VOCs — benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene — carry serious chronic hazards.
What the evidence says
The US EPA reports indoor VOC levels 2–5× outdoor levels, and up to 1,000× during and after activities such as paint stripping. WHO indoor air guidelines set limits for benzene, formaldehyde, naphthalene and trichloroethylene.
How it's regulated
The EU Decopaint Directive caps VOC content in decorative paints (g/L limits by product type). US SCAQMD Rule 1113 sets stricter regional limits often cited by 'zero-VOC' claims.

Does 'zero VOC' mean no emissions?+
No. Zero-VOC usually means below 5 g/L before tinting; colourants can add VOCs back, and the claim covers only regulated compounds, not every emission.
How long should I ventilate after painting?+
Most emissions occur in the first 72 hours but low-level off-gassing continues for weeks. Cross-ventilate for at least three days and avoid sleeping in a freshly painted room the first night.

VOCs in paint & cleaners rarely appears under that exact name on packaging. Manufacturers use trade names, umbrella terms such as "fragrance" or "performance finish", or simply omit process chemicals that are not classed as intentional ingredients. That is why reading a claim ("free from", "non-toxic", "natural") tells you far less than reading the composition and the certifications behind it.
The practical approach is to work backwards from certifications that test finished products rather than from ingredient lists alone. A scheme with residue limits and third-party lab testing catches substances that a marketing claim will never mention, including contamination introduced during dyeing, coating or packaging.
Exposure also depends on use. The same substance matters much more in something worn against skin all day, heated, chewed, or used on broken skin than in a rigid object handled briefly. Judge risk by contact, duration and temperature, not by the scariness of the name.
