Are natural ingredients safer than synthetic ones?

Short answer

Not inherently. 'Natural' has no legal definition, and plenty of natural substances — essential oils, lead, poison ivy, certain botanical extracts — are irritants, allergens or toxins. Safety depends on the specific molecule, the dose and the exposure route, not the origin story.

The detail

Essential oils are the clearest example: they are natural, popular in 'clean' formulations, and among the most common causes of cosmetic contact allergy. Meanwhile, well-studied synthetics like glycerin, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid have excellent safety profiles.

Where the natural/synthetic distinction genuinely matters is upstream: petroleum-derived ingredients carry fossil extraction impact, and biodegradability differs sharply. That is an environmental argument, not a personal-safety one.
