How often do product scores and rankings update?

Short answer

Scores recompute weekly, and immediately whenever a certification is added, lapses or is revoked, a recall is published, or a documented controversy is added to a brand's record. Rankings on category pages are generated at request time, so the order you see always reflects the current data.

The detail

Because the list is generated live rather than hand-maintained, a page you bookmarked can reorder between visits. That is intentional — a static 'best of' list decays the moment a certification expires.

Editorial framing — the intros, trade-off notes and buying advice — is reviewed each quarter, so the prose and the data update on different cadences.

Why this answer is more complicated than a yes or no

“How often do product scores and rankings update?” is usually answered with a single word online, and the single word is usually wrong. Most sustainability questions depend on scope (which product, which market, which year), on the standard being applied, and on how long the item will actually be used.

Our approach is to answer the question directly first, then show the conditions under which the answer changes. That way a quick reader gets a usable answer and a careful reader gets the reasoning, including the cases where the popular answer breaks down.

Where evidence is genuinely contested, we say so rather than picking the more shareable side. Claims we cannot trace to a named standard, a regulator or published testing are labelled unverified.

What changes the answer

The four variables that most often flip a sustainability verdict.
VariableWhy it mattersHow to check
Product lifespanA durable item amortises its footprint over yearsLook for repairability and warranty length
Certification scopeCoverage is per line, not per brandAsk for the certificate number
Market and lawRequirements differ by countryCheck the claim for the market you buy in
Use patternWashing, heating and daily contact dominate impactJudge against how you'll actually use it
