Which sustainability certifications matter most?
Short answer
The ones with a published standard, an accredited auditor and a public register you can search. In practice that means GOTS for textiles, Fair Trade for agricultural supply chains, Leaping Bunny for animal testing, USDA/EU Organic for food and cosmetics, FSC for wood and paper, and B Corp at company level.
The detail
Certification is a floor, not a ranking. A GOTS T-shirt is not automatically better than an uncertified one from a transparent small maker — but it is verifiable, and verifiability is what most claims lack.
Watch scope carefully. FSC Mix can contain controlled-but-uncertified wood; OCS tracks fibre content only; RSPO Book & Claim guarantees no physical certified palm in your product. The badge tells you less than the specific variant of the badge.
