Do UV light sanitizers really work?

How to use a UV sanitizer so it actually disinfects
- Clean the item first. Wipe off oil, dust and residue. UV-C cannot penetrate a fingerprint smear, so a dirty surface stays contaminated underneath.
- Use an enclosed chamber. Put the item inside a closed unit rather than waving a wand over it — the chamber guarantees the exposure geometry and protects your eyes and skin.
- Position for full exposure. Lay items flat and separated, with the dirtiest face toward the lamp. Turn double-sided items and run a second cycle.
- Run the full cycle. Follow the stated time, typically 3–10 minutes. Cutting it short cuts the dose proportionally.
- Replace the lamp on schedule. UV-C lamp output fades long before the lamp stops lighting up — check the rated hours and replace even if it still glows.

No. UV-C kills what it can reach but removes nothing — no dirt, no oils, no residue. Clean first, then sanitize if you want the extra step.
What can you put in a UV sanitizer box?+
Phones, keys, earbuds, glasses, remote controls, toothbrush heads, pacifiers, nail tools and other hard, dry, heat-tolerant items. Keep fabric, food, plants and anything with soft rubber that will embrittle out of it.
Do UV toothbrush sanitizers work?+
They measurably reduce bacteria on the bristle surface facing the lamp, which is the part UV can reach. They don't sterilise the inside of the bristle tuft, and they're no substitute for rinsing and replacing heads every three months.
Is UV-C the same as the UV light in a nail lamp?+
No. Nail lamps emit UV-A around 365–405nm to cure gel and have no germicidal effect. Only UV-C at 200–280nm disinfects.
