That usually means three things working together: materials that were grown or made without harming people or ecosystems, a supply chain that pays fairly and can be audited by someone other than the brand, and a product durable enough that it doesn't need replacing next year. Certifications are shorthand for the first two; build quality, repairability and refill options cover the third.

Where a category is prone to greenwashing — fast-fashion accessories, scented candles, novelty gadgets — we weight the score harder toward third-party audits and published supplier lists, and we say so on the guide itself.

3. Check the certifications. Look for at least one independently audited mark: B Corp, Fair Trade, GOTS, Leaping Bunny or FSC.
