FSC Certified
Forest Stewardship Council certification for responsibly managed forests.
What it is
The Forest Stewardship Council certifies forests, paper, timber and wood products against ten principles covering legal compliance, indigenous rights, worker rights, community relations, environmental impact, management planning, monitoring, conservation of high-value forests, and plantation management.
How it's verified
Forest management certifications cover individual forests; chain-of-custody certifications track timber through every processor and trader. Both require annual third-party audits by FSC-accredited certification bodies.
What to look for
Tree-and-checkmark FSC logo with one of three sub-labels: FSC 100% (fully certified), FSC Mix (blended with controlled sources), or FSC Recycled.
Watch out for
PEFC and SFI are competing schemes with looser standards in some regions. FSC is generally considered the most rigorous globally, especially for tropical forests.
What it doesn't cover
FSC does not guarantee carbon neutrality of paper or wood products. The FSC Mix label allows blending FSC, recycled, and 'controlled' (non-certified but low-risk) wood — only FSC 100% is fully certified content.

Frequently asked
Is bamboo FSC certified?+
Some bamboo plantations carry FSC certification — but most consumer bamboo products do not. If sustainability matters, look for FSC bamboo specifically, and check that adhesives and finishes meet low-emission standards.

What FSC Certified certification actually guarantees
FSC Certified is only meaningful within its defined scope. Certifications cover a specific product, factory or supply-chain stage — almost never an entire company — so the correct question is never "is this brand FSC Certified?" but "is this item, in this line, currently covered?"
Certification also has a shelf life. Certificates are issued for a fixed period and renewed against audits. A brand that once qualified may not be covered today, which is why we check registry entries and dates rather than relying on logos reproduced on marketing pages.
Finally, a certification is a floor, not a ceiling. It rules out the worst practices in the dimensions it measures and stays silent on everything else — durability, repairability, shipping distance and labour conditions outside the audited stage all sit outside most schemes.
